In Between

The theme of the month in our local camera club is black & white. Since all I was seeing were monochrome images, I decided to make one in color instead. I found these old chess pieces in my closet for the shot.

The white pieces were light wood and took the spray paint well. For the black piece, I masked it with Blu Tack, since the curves were too deep for tape. I sprayed it with white paint, but it reacted oddly, so I had to finish it by hand.

I wondered what to use as a point light to get sharp shadows and ended up using the iPhone flashlight as the key light, with a flash for fill.
